CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme Deadline Imminent

The final deadline for registration for the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is September 30th 2010 but companies should allow time for the Environment Agency to run checks, including anti-money laundering for company’s senior officers referred to
in the process.

Missing the deadline will cost £5000 and incur an additional charge of £500 per day, up to a maximum of £45,000. And to add to that, there is also reputational damage from a company being listed as non-compliant.

Less than a third of the estimated 5,000 or so businesses and public sector organisations expected to be affected by the new CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) have so far registered.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (formerly known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment) launched in April 2010 and is a new mandatory energy-saving and carbon-emissions-reduction scheme for the UK. It aims to ensure organisations contribute to the UK's emissions reductions of at least 34% on 1990 levels by 2020 through improved energy efficiency.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is administered across the UK by the Environment Agency. The scheme is regulated by the Environment Agency in England and Wales, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency in Northern Ireland, and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency in Scotland.

All public and private sector organisations that had at least one half-hourly meter (a meter that records energy every 30 minutes) during 2008 must register or make an information disclosure.

If an organisation consumed at least 6 gigawatt-hours of qualifying electricity through all of its meters during 2008 - equivalent to an annual electricity bill of around £500,000 - then it will need to participate in the scheme by monitoring energy consumption and purchasing allowances equivalent to their emissions each year.

However, if the organisation has a half-hourly electricity meter but consumed less than this amount of electricity, it will need to make an information disclosure via the CRC Registry on the Environment Agency’ website.  They will not have to monitor and report their annual energy use or purchase allowances.
