Chris Smith, Sales & Marketing Director, on365

Chris started work as a technical apprentice with Zenith Electronics.  As he neared the end of his training he was persuaded to move to the sales department and quickly rose through the organisation to became product sales manager.  From there he moved to  Phillips Corporation where he worked for their high volume power supply division, Hinchley Electronics and then to Powernetics where he was National Sales Manager. During this time, Chris was approached by an Israeli manufacturer of UPS systems, Savin Electronics to set up a joint venture in the UK. In 1989, Savin UK was formed with Chris as MD and the operation quickly grew to a turnover in excess of ?4 million. Savin UK merged with Universal Power Systems (now on365) in 1994 where Chris became Sales and Marketing Director alongside Colin Richardson as Managing Director.

Tony Day, Global Director for Datacentre Projects & Services, APC by Schneider Electric

A Chartered Architect and mechanical engineer with wide design and management experience in both engineering and construction industries, Tony had an initial background in research and development for a large multi-national engineering manufacturer followed by experience within production engineering and plant management.  Product development experience includes electronic control systems within the aerospace industry; telecommunications in the field of digital telephone exchanges; and prefabricated plant and accommodation modules for the petrochemical industry. 

As Technical Director of a datacentre design & build firm, Tony was responsible for the planning and design of over 5 million sq feet of datacentre facilities. As  MD of a specialist subsidiary tecnikon, he developed prefabricated and preassembled datacentres and was the designer of the tecnikon patented first industry autonomous rack cabinet system (datacentre in a cabinet) which received a UK Government DTI SMART Award for technical innovation in March 2003. Joined APC in May 2003 following APC’s acquisition of tecnikon as Chief Engineer Rack Cooling Solutions in Datacentre solution applications for both cooling and all other aspects of the total datacentre infrastructure.

Tony has represented APC on the management committee of the EcoDC initiative a consortium of 11 industry companies that came together to design and build an ecological datacentre. Also represented APC on the EU Code of Conduct: Energy Efficiency for Datacentres committee meetings and is an active member of a number of The Green Grid technical work groups. Since the acquisition of APC by Schneider Electric he is currently responsible  for datacentre architecture.

Rod Evans, MD & VP Northern Europe, SGI

Rod Evans is currently leading sales of SGI’s Data Center solutions to customers in Northern Europe. SGI is focused on helping customers solve their most demanding technology challenges by delivering: clustered computing and storage solutions, high-performance computing and storage solutions, Eco-logical™ datacentre solutions, software and services.
 
Prior to his current role at SGI, Evans has also held the role of EMEA Client Director for Intel Solution Services, where he was responsible for the development of their datacentre consultancy business across Europe. During his time with Intel, Rod opened new sales operations in Benelux and France and grew revenues by 200% over a 2 year period. Prior to that, he held several key sales positions within EMC Corporation over five years including EMEA sales director for Network Attached Storage Products and global practice manager for Networked Storage Services.
 
With almost 25 years experience in selling and providing services to Datacentre environments, Rod has become recognised as one of the leading technical sales managers in Europe and his experience has assisted many customers with making the most effective datacentre technology choices.  In addition to SGI and Intel, Evans has  held sales and management positions at other leading datacentre suppliers including Hitachi Data Systems, Amdahl Corporation and ICL.

Kevin Sell, Head of Technical Facilities, Telstra

Kevin Sell is responsible for all Telstra International Data Centres in the UK totalling over 180,000 sq/ft of white space. Not only the upkeep and running of the Data Centres but also strategic planning of future requirements and operations.

Following time at Morgan Stanley and Bloomberg, Kevin is well aware of the high levels of resiliency required by today’s customers. His main background is M&E services which are the backbone of any Datacentre. Recent projects include the build and fit out of 10,000sq/ft of white space for the latest addition to the Telstra International Campus. Kevin is also involved in improving the efficiency of legacy Data space and incorporating new ideas into live environments.

Simon Furber, Network Manager, Brunel University

Simon Furber is the Network Manager at Brunel University. After studying at the West London Institute of H.E he stayed on and joined Computing Services in 1988. West London Institute then merged with Brunel University in 1996, making a larger four-campus university. Simon has a wide background in support, applications development and, for the last seven years, more exclusively with systems and networks. In July 2000, after a re-organisation within the department, a dedicated networks team was created and he was appointed to lead this team.

Since then Brunel has been extensively renovating its network, and is developing and adopting new technologies and convergence strategies for the future. Brunel is now consolidating primarily on its Uxbridge campus with several large capital build programs completed or in progress. Simon has driven the full converged network which includes all aspects of voice, video, collaboration and mobility, as well as joint developments of rich media and its delivery including streaming media, live IPTV and digital signage and the vast majority of the campus building and security systems. Simon also manages and develops the data centre and takes a lead on new ‘blue sky’ developments.

Andy Lawrence, Research Director for Eco-Efficient IT, The 451 Group

Andy has been studying, analysing and writing about the IT industry for more than 20 years, enjoying a career as an award-winning journalist and technology publisher before becoming a full-time analyst. Before joining The 451 Group, Andy was co-founder and Editorial Director of London-based Infoconomy, publisher of Information Age magazine. In the 1990s, he was the Editorial Director at ComputerWire, a global IT news service; and a contributing editor to the FT on the electronic office. In 1993, he founded the London-based Computer Business Review magazine, where he pioneered critical, in-depth business coverage of the IT industry. Andy has appeared at conferences, on TV, and in podcasts and webinars discussing developments in enterprise IT. He has a particular interest in how the energy use and carbon footprint of IT can be reduced – how IT can become more sustainable – as well as the role of IT in improving energy distribution and management, and the role of markets and governments in enforcing or encouraging sustainable practices.

Andy has advised many businesses on their green IT strategies, both suppliers and end-user organisations and is the author of several influential and groundbreaking 451 reports, including: 'Eco-Efficient IT: The Eco-Imperative and Its Impact on Suppliers and Users'; 'Power Management: Managing and Monitoring IT Energy Use From the Desktop to the Datacenter'; 'Eco-Efficient IT: Policy, Legislation and Compliance'; and 'Datacenter Management and Energy-Efficiency Software.'
